Seafarers can at times be faced with distressing events such as fire, medical emergencies, groundings, piracy, collisions or witnessing death as a result of an accident or suicide.
Being exposed to such events could lead seafarers to suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), an anxiety disorder which makes it difficult to cope with day-to-day life.
PTSD is not the same as depression or anxiety and sufferers need different and specific support.
This course is designed to assist in raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of PTSD, how it can be treated and to offer guidance on some of the support options available to seafarers who may be suffering from PTSD.
